"Protecting Healthy Lakes" will be presented by Vermont's Department of Enviromental Conversation. As Ben Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Long-term water quality monitoring indicates that our restoration efforts targeting eutrophic (high nutrient) lakes are working well; however, Vermont’s oligotrophic (low-nutrient) lakes show declining water quality trends. Because these lakes are still considered healthy, restoration efforts have not been focused in their direction. Oligotrophic lakes are ecologically and economically important to Vermont’s landscape. Healthy lakes need enhanced protection to preserve their existing water quality and to prevent further decline.Q & A will follow.
In addition, there will be a Panel Discussion on "Managing Roads in Lake Watersheds". How can we protect lakes from road erosion? This panel will broadly discuss how the new Municipal Roads General Permit (MRGP) requirements help to protect lakes. Panelists will not only discuss the ways in which municipalities are working to improve hydrologically connected roads but also describe how lake associations can adapt MRGP tools to identify and fix eroding sections of private roads. A new iPhone/Android app will be shared that supports road erosion inventories.Q & A will follow.
Attendees will present and discuss their Lake concerns.
